Survey of geotechnical investigation methods and determination of parameter values

In this paper, the authors describe the result of a questionnaire by TC23 of the ISSMGE to investigate the practices within the TC23 member countries for carrying out geotechnical investigations and determining geotechnical parameter values, including the determination of characteristic values used in limit state design calculations. The answers have been analysed and the results are presented in this paper. The results reveal that there are significant differences in the practices throughout the world with regard to who is responsible for planning geotechnical investigations and selecting geotechnica parameter values for use in design calculations. The authors conclude that more guidance is required in new geotechnical design codes on how parameter values should be determined. Furthermore, the contract documentation should clearly identify who is responsible for the planning of investigations and selection of parameter values.
