The paper presents partial results of the case study seismic analysis of the new railway station complex in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The usual seismic analysis, based on the code, i.e. on the equivalent static load approach, was first performed. Also, in order to be "on the safe side", the seismic coefficient was deliberately overestimated. However, after seismological site investigations and detailed time-history analysis, much "worse" results were obtained. It is due to the influence of substantial non-symmetry of mass distribution, i.e. to the influence of rotary inertia terms, which were not taken into account in the previous and routine engineering analysis. In order to obtain the qualitative and also quantitative measures of the effects on non-symmetry of mass to the overall seismic performance of the building, the corresponding parametric analysis was performed. Seismic analyses with various combinations of mass effects, like taking into account or neglecting the eccentricity of centers of mass and/or inertial couples, were done. The corresponding conclusions related to the influence of adverse mass distribution for the considered building were made.
