THE WIND FARM GRID CODE PROVISIONS AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR FUTURE WIND GENERATION IN IRELAND

The grid connection regulations in Ireland have been updated to facilitate the future expansion of wind generation on the national grid. Formerly the grid connection regulations Grid Code V1.1 were tailored for synchronous generators and the process of attaining a wind farm grid connection was therefore relatively difficult as wind turbines typically employ asynchronous induction generators. In this paper the recently published Wind Farm Power Station Grid Code Provisions WFPS 1 are compared with the clauses in the Grid Code that they supersede. The amended requirements for Fault Ride-through, Reactive Power Capability, Automatic Voltage Regulation and Frequency Response in particular are presented in detail. Furthermore, the practical implementation of the grid connection regulations in the aforementioned areas is discussed and the implications of compliance for future wind generation assessed.
