Adapting planar solid oxide fuel cells (pSOFCs) to use gases derived from solid fuels (coal and biomass) could be a key in producing economically distributed combined heat and power (CHP) sources. Further, commercialization of fuel cells capable of using abundant domestic supplies of coal and biomass has broad economic and infrastructure-related security implications by reducing reliance on foreign fuel and lowering stress on the electrical grid. The work, which includes experimentation for cells with over 200 hours of operation, examines the effects of the syngas, with and without H_2S, on pSOFC operation. Results presented in this paper will focus on ASR results for the single-cell and stack tests of simulated flue gas with and without H_2S.
