PROGRESS OF THE CHINA/CIMMYT COOPERATION ON SHUTTLE BREEDING AND GERMPLASM EXCHANGE AIMED AT COMBINING HIGH-YIELDING POTENTIAL WITH RESISTANCE TO SCAB

A joint, shuttle-breeding and germplasm-exchange program focusing on the integration of scab resistance from Chinese wheats into the high-yielding, CIMMYT wheats has been operating between CIMMYT and China for the last 15 years. At CIMMYT, progress in breeding for scab resistance was built largely on the use of Chinese germplasm such as Sumai 3, Ning 7840, Shanghai 3, Shanghai 4, Shanghai 5, and Chuanmai 18. In addition to its scab resistance, the Chinese wheats also show other desirable characters and outstanding bread wheat lines from various mega-environments have been developed at CIMMYT. CIMMYT wheats contribute high-yield potential, good lodging resistance, rusts resistance, and good quality to the Chinese wheat improvement program. Varieties and advanced lines were developed by crossing the Chinese and CIMMYT wheats. Currently, around 5-7 million ha of the Chinese wheat area is planted to CIMMYT derivatives. Training and information exchange have greatly improved the scientific capacity of the Chinese breeding program.
