The route of steel penetration in MgO-SiC composites is studied in this article. The mix of fused magnesia and silicon carbide powder was pressed into a crucible shape under isostatic pressure. After curing and drying process, samples of 5kg IF steel(interstitial free steel) were heated in crucibles with mould flux cover at 1600℃ for 3 hours. The boundary between refractories and steel after heating were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and electron probe microanalysis with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDAS). The result shows that the formation of liquid phase in matrix of composite under high temperature act as the route for the steel penetration, thus affect the mass transportation between liquid steel and composites.
