The paper assesses the potential for the use of liquefaction to deal with scrap automobile tyres. It was found that high dissolution could be achieved under less severe conditions for tyres compared with coals. However under the more severe conditions needed for coal, the liquefaction of tyres was not unduly affected in blends of coal and tyres. TPO was less effective as a solvent than a process derived recycle solvent (PDRS), but a solvent mix of PDRS/TPO containing only 25% TPO was as effective as PDRS for dissolving tyres, but a much higher proportion is needed to maintain the dissolution for coal. The problems of adopting liquefaction as an approach are analysed and it is proposed that a combined liquefaction/pyrolysis approach would be a better solution.
