When drilling tunnels, the power required for installation is usually determined empirically. This paper applies theoretical models of cutting processes in saturated soil at different rake angles to the slurry shield tunnelling machine in order to determine the practical parameters of the models. It also derives calculation formulae for the cutting forces and installed power of soil cutting for the cutting wheel that are based on the practical structure of the cutting wheel and on operational features
