Mobility management is a challenging issue in mobile computing environment. Studying the situation of a mobile crossing the boundaries of location areas is significant to evaluate the cost and performance of location management strategies. The distributions of the count of a mobile crossing the location areas for two kinds of call processes: renewal process and Markovian arrival process are obtained by the probability argument and the density evolution method based on vector Markov processes. In addition, we compare the cost of the Basic Location Management Scheme with that of the Pointer Forward utilizing the obtained result.
