In many modern applications polymeric materials have to stand fast dynamic loadings. Also the mechanism of failure can be important under dynamic conditions. But the mechanical behaviour and the material properties of most polymeric materials under high speed loadings are poorly known. Consequently, the measurement of material data is necessary to expand data bases and support material descriptions. Therefore high speed video recording enables the characterization of material behaviour at high strain rates. Vectors of local deformation can be calculated by the use of cross correlation algorithms that are known from Particle-lmage-Velocimetry (PIV). Especially for polymers this is a powerful tool for the investigation of material properties like Poisson's Ratio and Young's Modulus as a function of loading velocity.
