With the exception of hardness testing, uniaxial tensile testing is the most common type of mechanical test performed on metals. The popularity of the test is due to its ability to not only provide quantitative data on a range of mechanical properties, but it also gives insight into strengthening mechanisms. For example, there is an intimate relationship between microstructure and performance in the test. It is essentially used for determining the mechanical chracteristics of isotropic materials that is, materials whose properties are the same regardless of measurement direction. For anisotropic materials such as composite materials and textiles, biaxial tensile testing is required.
