West Sichuan basin is a kind of foreland basin, where it is rich in gas source with a large area of traps and good sealing conditions. It is equipped with a good environment for forming medium or large gas fields. But this area possessed exploration risk with complicated structure and gas pool formation mechanism. Based on the analysis of typical gas pool and gas system, the authors put forward that Xul-Xu2 gas system and Xu5-Jurassic gas system is natural gas exploration targets. According to the study of gas sources, traps, migration, accumulation, sealing and gas pool formation mechanism. It is pointed out that Longmenshan nappe frontier fault fold structural belt, Micangshan frontier fault fold structural belt, Zitong sag and Longquanshan fault fold structural belt are favorable prospective plays of natural gas exploration.
