Random amplification of polymorphic DNA is a typing technique shown here to be adequate for identification of the species included in seafood products. Some of the advantages of this technique are that it does not requrie previous knowledge of any DNA sequence; it can be applied to raw, as well as to processed samples without noticeable changes in the pattern obtained. Finally, it can be used to identify the individual species included in mixtures, since the fingerprint of the mixture is equivalent to the mixture of the individual fingerprints.
