The article presents results of research on detecting target manoeuvres for the needs of automatic radar tracking in marine navigational radars using a neural filter. The analysis covers the effect of course manoeuvre size on the possibility of its being detected by the filter. The effects of both manoeuvre size and angular speed were tested. The results presented constitute part of the research on the method of neural estimation of movement vector of targets tracked by a marine radar. The concept worked out assumes automatic tuning of the filter to the current target movement dynamics. An essential aspect of this concept is an early enough detection of a manoeuvre.
