Agricultural peat soils generally are considered as large sources of nitrous oxide (N_2O) to the atmosphere. Limited amount of studies on afforested peat fields indicate that afforestation may not decrease N_2O emissions from the forest floor. Spatial and temporal variability in N_2O emissions stresses the importance of continuous measurements of the N_2O fluxes. In the present study N_2O emissions were measured with enclosure and eddy covariance techniques from an afforested peat field located in western Finland. The emissions of N_2O were comparable to those measured from agricultural peat soils and one to two orders of magnitude higher than those measured from mineral forest soils.
