For many years it has been recognized that "in-plane" orientation of aromatic polyimides exists in thin films. The molecular long axis preferentially aligns itself parallel to the surface of the film. The majority of work carried out thus far concerns poly(4, 4'-oxy-diphenlyenepyromellitimide) (PMDA-4,4'-ODA) which is commercially anvailable under the trade name of Kapton and is produced by Durpont In recent years, this kind of structural anisotropy has also been found in other aromatic polyimide thin films.
