As discussed by Boothroyd, Dewhurst, and Knight [2] and other authors (e.g. [1]), design for manufacture is a philosophy, derived from the common experience of many manufacturing firms, which states that manufacturing issues must be given adequate consideration concurrently with product design, early in the concept formulation stage of development. For many industries, this idea was quite revolutionary and often had wide-ranging effects on the organization and daily operations of firms that adoptedrnDFM as a guiding principle. On the other hand, the semiconductor industry has incorporated the basic ideas behind DFM as a matter of course and research into relations between integrated circuit design and manufacture is very actively reported in the current literature. DFM for integrated circuits also contains concepts which have no apparent analog in other industries, such as design for testability and design for yield. The relation of these issues with circuit design and fabrication is highly complex, so that DFM for integrated circuits appears at once to be more straightforward than in other industries, yet much more complex.
