In many wireless sensor network applications, large quantities of sensors, known as "smart dust", are randomly deployed over a region to perform a variety of monitoring and control tasks. The problems of determining sensor locations and verifying their coverage after deployment are challenging ones, crucial for many applications. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to address these problems using location guided laser beams as stimulating signals to trigger randomly deployed sensor nodes into self-organizing clusters within virtually defined geographical-grids. Each cluster has a cluster head that can communicate with a base station about their location and membership. With a feedback radio link from the base station to the agent that is carrying out the deployment, it is possible for the deployment agent to correct the problems of uncovered spots or under covered spots during the deployment phase without post deployment assessment delay and redeployment cost.
