Distributed Service Platform for Adaptive Mobile Services

This paper provides a distributed service platform supporting adaptation of mobile services. A requirement analysis of future mobile services has been carried out to establish a solid base for the development of the service platform. In particular, adaptation process and functions are focused on, and a middleware architecture solution supporting adaptation of mobile services is developed. The Architecture utilizes the Generic Service Elements (GSE) approach, which has previously been defined only at the conceptual level. The main contribution of this research is the definition of a set of GSEs, the related service platform architecture, and its evaluation. The evaluation of the service platform has been carried out by implementing the service platform, developing a set of adaptive mobile services, and executing them in a prototype environment. The evaluation indicates that the developed service platform solution is applicable in resource-constrained mobile environments, because the overall size of the prototype implementation is less than 400 KB.
