Experimental study on the response of local clay brick wall panels to the lateral in-plane loads

A study through an experimental work has been done in a laboratory to evaluate horizontal displacement behaviour of brick wall panel size of 600 mm × 600 mm × 95 mm under lateral in-plane loads combined with four parameters of different value of initial compressive pressure to simulate gravity load acted on wall panels. The lateral monotonic, repeated and cyclic in-plane loads were applied to specimens in horizontal direction to simulate static earthquake loads. All specimens of wall panels were constructed of local clay bricks, traditionally manufactured in Cikarang, a village near Jakarta - Indonesia. The physical characteristics of bricks are 190 ±2.5 mm of length, 90 ±2.5 mm of width, 46 ±2.5 mm of thickness, 1.69 ±0.05 gram/mm~3 of density, and compressive strength of 10±2MPa. Some slip failure pattern occurred during tests and most specimens collapsed in brittle failure mechanism with the average of lateral stiffness about 3.676 kN/mm. It is found that horizontal stiffness of brick wall panels were not significantly affected by the magnitude of compressive pressure, but the capacity of wall panels in retaining cyclic horizontal load is about 50% lower than of wall panels in retaining monotonic and 0repeated loads. To improve lateral stiffness of brick walls it is recommended to add layer of mortar plaster on both sides of wall surfaces.
