A taxonomical study of application frameworks for component based developments to support rapid changes of Business needs

Appropriate IT support for the rapid changes in business is a big challenge for anyone involved in IT industry. Most, if not all, business applications today are web-based. Developing high quality web-based applications efficiently within time is one of the most important goals of software engineering today. One emerging solution for this problem is application framework. In this paper, we investigate the development of web-based application frameworks so that both designer and developers of web-based application can take advantage of. This may also helps the designer of application frameworks. We investigated more than 80 application frameworks currently available. We studied and categorized 25 of them and analyzed 5 of them in detail. For each category, we find functionalities needed. We also provide some guideline for designer and developer of the application frameworks.
