Residual stress is an inevitable fact of life in manufacturing industries such as aerospace for example and can exist as a deliberately induced 'friendly' phenomenon to give benefit to the product or it can exist in a form that is non-beneficial to the product as a 'foe'. The importance of measuring and understanding residual stress has increased in importance in recent years with improved techniques and the need for standards in every walk of life. This paper reviews the application of beneficial residual stress and the presence of non-beneficial residual stress and also highlights some of the advances in economic measurement for residual stress determination.
