In today’s modern practice of Radiation Oncology it is becoming increasingly common to follow many patientsrnwith breast cancer. There is a proven association between prior radiation and the development of breast cancer,rnalthough in many instances the available sources of data are confusing. Characteristic features of radiationrninduced breast cancer are the importance of age at first exposure to radiation and the long latency period. Thernrisk of breast cancer is highest in women exposed in the first decade of life and lessens progressively withrnincreased age at exposure. The latency period is typically 10 years or more; a time in which other age dependentrnfactors may influence the expression of the malignant phenotype. Genetic factors may also (in theory) increase arnparticular patient’s susceptibility.
