SURFACE TREATMENT FOR FEED SCREWS: A LABORATORY QUICK FIX OR A LONG TERM PRODUCTION SOLUTION

Test laboratories process a wide range of polymers, which may be abrasive and/or corrosive. Laboratory feed screws are typically a general purpose design and manufactured from carbon steel which does not perform well in aggressive environments. Surface treatments, exotic materials or tool steels are sometimes used to overcome the limitations of general purpose feed screws. This paper compares commonly used options to improve feed screw characteristics with thermal spray carbide coatings. The topics of wear and corrosion resistance as well as polymer release are discussed.
