Efforts of Naif Arab University for Security Sciences to Enhance Nuclear Security in the Arab Countries

The crucial contribution of educational institutions in confronting terrorism is parallel to the rolernplayed by security apparatus in its combat. This confirms the central role of universities, institutions ofrnacademic and professional training, security research organizations and sanctuaries of worship in the overallrnconfrontation against terrorism. Unique among these universities is Naif Arab University for Security Sciencesrn(NAUSS) which has made tremendous contributions to fight against crime and terrorism through its academicrnendeavors. NAUSS was established in 1978 as an Arab institution specialized in security sciences to fulfill thernneeds of the Arab law enforcement agencies for an academic institution that promotes research in securityrnsciences, offers graduate education programs and conduct short-term training courses, which should contributernto the prevention and control of crimes in the Arab world. NAUSS is a regional organization providingrneducation and training in all security disciplines to students from all the 22 Arab countries. This paper willrndiscuss the efforts made by NAUSS to enhance the nuclear security in the Arab countries. NAUSS and thernIAEA organized several workshops, forums and training courses which aimed to explore and improve thernnuclear security culture and awareness. In addition, NAUSS incorporates an introductory course in nuclearrnsecurity into the existing graduate studies security sciences program. In collaboration with the Office of NuclearrnSecurity, NAUSS launched a post-graduate degree programme focused on nuclear security based on IAEArnguidance documents (NSS # 12) and being used to reach the region in support of nuclear security education.rnThis degree is currently being enhanced through integration of instructional materials from the Master ofrnScience in Nuclear Security degree framework developed for the IAEA and the global education community byrnthe International Nuclear Security Education Network (INSEN).
