The Piezo Actuator Drive (PAD) presented by Kappel and Rucha on the Actuator 2006 exhibits a combination of characteristics that makes it ideally suitable for robotics and positioning tasks. The experiments showed that the torque of the PAD and its general function are not considerably affected by the 1.5 Tesla magnetic field of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging device (MRI). Replacing the ferromagnetic components by non-magnetic high-grade steel with the same elastic modulus does neither significantly affect the torque nor the other mechanical characteristics. The attraction of the magnetic field on the PAD is 50 percent of its gravity.
