In a previous paper (7) within this conference series initial results of a full-scale commercial trial of AA6016 High Strength have been published. Since then there have been decisive improvements made in terms of formability whilst maintaining the high level of paint bake response utilising a refined chemical composition and an optimised process route, which does include a soft water quench and a pre-age. 1. AA6016 High Strength offers an excellent balance between strength and formability and has the potential for (1) further down gauging and hence further weight savings, (2) lower paint bake temperatures or even complete avoidance of a dedicated ageing step, (3) higher strength in low strained regions 2. Roping is controlled and process routes can be optimised by using quantitative software to evaluate roping parameter features like feature length and frequency. 3. Surface packages can be tailored according to the forming and joining requirements.
