摘要

Appropriately designed and validated modelling studies can assess the magnitude and likely footprint of continuous, seasonal or episodic infill. They can also enable optimisation of management options such as sediment traps or changes to dredged areas and provide input to the dredging strategy e.g. over-dredging prior to monsoon season. A variety of techniques exist to aid in the assessment of sedimentation in areas to be maintained. Confidence in the predictions from any technique comes from good quality data for the site/channel and good understanding of the sedimentation mechanisms. The most cost-effective approach to an investigation of sedimentation at a particular location will nearly always be for an initial desk based assessment to be undertaken. Models provide a useful, sometimes vital, tool for the assessment process although where possible evidence of model verification should be sought. The limitations, sensitivities and accuracy of any applied modelling technique should be presented along with the model results. In the presentation of model results the aim should be to clearly address the issues that the client or Regulators wish to have informed by the modelling studies.
