Design and Performance of a CORE A-Based Mediator Linking Distributed and Heterogeneous School Databases

The Ministry of Education has played an important role since 1997 in developing the School Information Management System (SIMS) for the computerization of administrative and educational work. A standard system was built and its variations have been installed in over 10,300 primary, middle and high schools in this country. The purpose of (his study is to design and implement a prototype of the statistics information mediator that collects student data from the distributed SIMSs and to measure its performance under the distributed and heterogeneous circumstances leading the way to the development of a practical system. Upon implementing the mediator by using Java, a CORBA ORB and JDBC, the performance result shows that the response time is mainly dependent on the number of local information sources. In addition, a local legacy source is influenced by the increasing number of simultaneously connecting clients, which hardly affects the response time in the case of local DBMS sources. On the whole, the DBMS sources show much more stable performance than the legacy source.
