Increasing productivity is probably the biggest challenge for today's cutting technology and requires constantly improvements of the spindle performance. This is especially true for High Speed Machining (HSM) applications. In order to achieve a maximum material removal rate (MRR) and a stable cutting process, spindle operation and process parameters (like the speed, the power, and the axial depth of cut) have to be selected considering the dynamical behaviour of the spindle including the chosen cutting tools. However, the spindle design has a massive influence on the dynamical behaviour and consequently on the process stability. This paper describes the influences of the spindle design on the process stability and develops spindle concepts and solutions for achieving a maximum MRR.
