The definition of HSC (High speed cutting) and HPM (High power milling) shows the need for sophisticated engineering solutions due to highest speed, load and dynamic behaviour of high speed spindles. The difference in spindle design for milling and grinding application, as well as the relevant bearing technologies, are presented. The shown examples of widely used applications base on the fact that productivity and tool lifetime are improved. Another proven benefit of HSC technology is better process control. The topic of this paper is to introducing the most recent spindle technology, a contact free bearing spindle, rated at 67kW @ 36krpm, featured with hydraulic tool clamping and rotor cooling system. Hydrostatic bearing spindles can be reliable solutions for achieving highest quality, productivity, repeatability of TCP (tool center point) and process stability. The achieved surface qualities and production rates enable this technology to open entirely new fields of applications and markets for the metal cutting industry. Process monitoring is closely related to the spindle, by which the tool is guided to perform on the work piece in the most precise and predictable way. Smart Vision offers an interface to understanding the dynamic behaviour of the spindle and react accordingly, in the best case by preventive action rather than desperate reaction.
