The in vitro blood compatibility of a new nickel free high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel Fe-Cr-Mn-Mo-N (BIOSSN4) was studied in this paper. The experimental results show that both the kinetic clotting time and the plasma recalcification time of the steel are longer than those of the conventional used medical 316L stainless steel, which reveals that the thromboresistant property of BIOSSN4 has been improved. In vitro platelet rich plasma adhesion test shows that nickel-free stainless steel only causes less activation of platelets, which was indicated by their morphology and low spreading. The surface tension and the interfacial tension between the steels and blood were calculated by Owens method, the blood compatibility mechanism of the steels was analyzed based on the difference between BIOSSN4 steel and 316L steel.
