GREENHOUSE GAS REDUCTION IMPACTS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY POLICIES

The potential exists in South Africa to improve energy efficiency in all sectors. Several countries have attempted to encourage or force improvements in energy efficiency through awareness campaigns and or standards. The South African government has been considering introducing policies and measures (PAMS) to improve the energy efficiency and energy intensity of the industrial, commercial, residential and transport sectors. A draft energy efficiency strategy has been developed which sets targets and defines the methods and policies that are being considered. This paper compares the reductions in final energy demand and greenhouse gases that could be achieved by implementing the selected energy efficiency policies put forward in the energy efficiency strategy.
