This paper presents an initial framework for incorporating geo-sequestration into the U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory. The framework is based on the underlying principles in preparing national inventories and the key processes associated with geo-sequestration. First, four principal geo-sequestration options are summarized: 1) enhanced oil recovery; 2) enhanced coal bed methane recovery; 3) depleted oil and natural gas fields; and 4) deep saline aquifers. Second, a brief summary of the U.S. inventory methodology and concepts for emission sources that are relevant to those needed for preparing an inventory for geo-sequestration are provided. In particular, three emission sources are addressed: natural gas and petroleum systems (including coal bed methane); CO_2 consumption (including enhanced oil recovery); and natural gas processing. Analogies between the geo-sequestration processes and the relevant inventory methodologies are summarized. Third, a potential framework for incorporating geo-sequestration processes into the inventory, including methodology structures and data needs is presented.
