Increased focus on reducing CO_2 emissions has created growing interest in CO_2 capture from industrial processes for storage in underground formations. However, the scattered CO_2 sources and the uncertainty in growth of the CO_2 market require a flexible transport system. New technical solutions, costs and energy requirements for ship-based transport of CO_2 are presented. All elements in the transport chain, namely liquefaction, storage, loading system, dedicated CO_2 ship(s), onshore loading and unloading, and offshore unloading systems are included in the study. A logistics model has been developed to find the optimum utilization of ship and storage. The total costs of ship-based transport are calculated to 150-200 NOK/tonne for volumes larger than 2 million tonnes/year and distances limited to the North Sea. For a selected case, including two sources (combined 2 million tonnes/year), the total costs are calculated to 177 NOK/tonne for optimized utilization of ship and storage capacity.
