Laser shock forming (LSF) and Laser peening forming (LPF) are two different sheet metal forming techniques. Both of them are based on a mechanical effect of shock waves induced by laser, while the distinction exists in many other aspects. In the LSF, the peak pressure of the shock waves at the sample surface is larger than the dynamic yield strength of the material, thus the metal sheet yields and deforms. Large area thin metal sheet forming can be realized by the combination of rude peening and fine peening processing; In the LPF, only the upper surface material of the shocked zones yields by controlling the laser parameters. After a series of shocks peened in a certain trace, a residual stress field distributing in a certain form is engendered and the metal sheet bend when the residual stress is released. In this paper, these two methods were introduced and compared from the processing methods, technique feature and their applications. It is indicated that they are high-flexible manufacturing process with excellent reproducibility and having great future in sheet forming field.
