Hot water-soluble crude polysaccharide (RBP) that was obtained from defatted rice bran showed significant immunomodulatory activity. RBP was successively fractionated by column chromatography on Sepharose CL-6B and DEAE Sepharose Fast Flow. Effect of each fraction on the proliferation of T lymphocytes induced by Con A was measured in vitro at various concentrations, and an active fraction, RBP-II, was purified. As compared with water-soluble polysaccharide isolated from Granoderma lucidum, which is a well-known medicinal herb, RBP-II showed similar stimulatory effects on humoral, cellular and non-specific immunity by oral administration in mice treated with immunosuppressive agent. Based on these results , the RBP-II is suggested as a supplement for immune enhancement.
