STUDY ON SEDIMENT IN SEA PORTS AND COAST PROTECTION

Sediment problems in coast engineering can be divided into two aspects. One is to avoid or reduce silt deposition in deepened water area, such as port basins, berths and approach channels, etc. Another is to accelerate silt deposition where groins or offshore structures have to be built to accumulate sediment in the sheltered areas Firstly, in this paper, several general topics in coast sediment movement are introduced, i.e. the sediment threshold by waves, the determination of sediment concentration by waves and tidal currents and the longshore sediment transport; the second is siltation problems in sea ports and the third is coast protection by means of accelerating accumulation works. In this paper some research results by the author are presented.
