Five kinds of chitosan sample with different degree of deacetylation (DD) and different molecular weight were respectively tested for paper produced by wheat straw pulp and NBKP as strengthening agents, then a few kind of chitosan that had better strengthening effect was preferably selected, No.2 is the best. In addition, a series of grafting copolymers of chitosan with cation starch was synthesized and their strengthening effect for paper were examined. It was found that the strengthening effect of the copolymer was better than that of unmodified chitosan. In addition, m_(chitosn): m_(starch) was equal to 1: 8 when the copolymer was synthesized, which means that the amount of chitosan in application as paper strengthening agent was effectively reduced by this modified method, so it is a good method to modify chitosan efficiently.
