The characterization of the Gorgoglione sandstones (Basilicata, South Italy)

Two types of sandstone commonly used as construction material in historical buildings in many places in the Basilicata region (south of Italy) were studied. The two types of material are also widely appreciated in modern construction, to the point that an extension of the quarry is expected. This work represents the first phase of their characterization in order to establish an appropriate and correct use of these stones in new construction, and additionally, to study suitable processes for their improvement and correction. The mineralogical-petrographical, geochemical and physical study revealed that the properties of the two types of stone differ considerably, and are thus likely to behave quite differently in their handling.
