'Closing the loop' - the role of design in the success of six small UK recycled product manufacturers

This paper introduces a multiple case study project which profiles six small UK enterprises (for-profit and not-for-profit) that manufacture recycled 'consumer durable' products. The challenges and opportunities faced by these enterprises are considered, along with their design approaches, and lessons for success are identified. The paper explores how recycled materials (recyclate) can be successfully incorporated into new product manufacture, providing the basis for new enterprise and firm competitiveness. Increased production of recycled products in the UK is a vital link in the cyclical production and consumption system expressed by the idea of 'closing the loop'.
