Experimental and CFD studies were conducted to determine the performance of straight-tube, bluff-body and swirl burners for treating copper concentrates. Results from the experimental study showed that the swirl burner gave superior performance to the straight-tube and bluff-body burners. The CFD analysis indicated that the superior performance resulted from the improved heat transfer characteristics, which reduced the overall reaction time of particles, and the improved flow characteristics, which increased the particle residence time. These two effects combined to increase the quantity of concentrate that could be smelted by the swirl burner.
