The trigonometric function of cos(6) plays an important role in communication systems, digital signal processing systems, and graphics processing systems. This paper presents a technique for generating a double-precision floating point representation of the cosine of an angle based on a Taylor Series expansion. The algorithm described outperforms the CORDIC algorithm and its many variants. A VHDL design of the cosine generator has been synthesized for an Altera Stratix II FPGA. Timing simulation has shown that the hardware design produces results more efficiently and more precisely than comparable published hardware implementations of a cosine generator.
