The design of a naval ship must be subjected to very restricted design rules that have to be applied during the design stage. There is a very high number of these rules, although most of them can be reduced to different measurements. These measurements have various parameters that give the different locations where the design rules have to be implemented. For any client who designs this type of vessels, having the option to impart the design rules that could help the user while carrying out their daily design task with a CAD tool, is a very high priority due to the great time needed to do the validation. Validation of design rules can take a variety of forms, including, when possible, the capability of preventing the user from endangering a design aspect that does not obey an associated design rule. For the prevention of the user trying to pass on a non-conforming aspect of the design, a pop-up warning that informs the user about the associated rule can be showed. This warning may inform, if applicable, of the design aspect that is breaking a required rule. There is a high level of inferred associativity between components and certain types of these would need to be easily identifiable to allow for the application of the associated rule.This paper discusses the various situations that can appear and describes the adopted solution to be integrated in a CAD system.
