Over the years tremendous changes have taken place in the refrigeration industry. There is a need to have a competitive edge in order to stay in the market. In order to satisfy the growing worldwide demand we need to develop more efficient and low noise compressors. We have considered noise reduction as a challenging task and applied Taguchi's robust design of experiments (DOE). Taguchi's DOE strategy was adopted to identify and optimize the significant parameters (factors) that affect the compressor noise. A seven-factor array was used in the experiment. The experiment was carried out with great efficiency and the degree of contribution of each factor has been determined quantitatively. The DOE yielded the optimized combination of design parameters affecting the compressor noise.
