Underwater abrasion resistance of waterway tunnel concrete linings

Head-race tunnels of new power plants on the river Soca (Plave II and Doblar II) and tailrace tunnel Drtijscica near the new highway are being constructed in Slovenia. The head-race tunnels are lined with reinforced concrete panels, while the tailrace tunnel is lined with fibre reinforced concrete panels. Concrete of these panels has to be resistive against abrasion of solid particles bared by water. Therefore, underwater abrasion resistance of the concrete was estimated with results obtained by test method given by ASTM C 1138. Results of control tests are given and discussed in this paper. Influence of some concrete properties on the underwater resistance is discussed also. The results, obtained up to now, show that concrete has higher underwater abrasion resistance, if it has higher energy absorption capacity measured by Wedge Splitting Test (WST) method.
