India is experiencing massive population growth and rapid urbanization. It is therefore important to plan, develop and manage metropolitan cities in an optimal, efficient, and effective manner within the financial resources available/ affordable. Urban transport system is one of the major areas that influences urban form/ structure and thus determines the quality of life within metropolitan cities. In the context of accelerated growth of metropolitan cities and large investments in metropolitan transport systems, it is necessary to appreciate the inter-relationship, develop simplified, operational models and use them, as a first step, to select the most appropriate transport system that is consistent with the proposed land-use of the city, and further to restructure the city's urban form/ structure with reference to proposed transport system. An attempt has been made in this paper to quantify the relationship between transport system and urban form/ structure. For this purpose, Delhi, the capital of India, has been taken as the case study for formulating and calibrating the urban form/ structure model as a result of introduction of mass rapid transport system (MRTS). The model has been applied to evaluate the potential pattern of spatial distribution of population and employment that can be further translated into land-use pattern.
