A comparison of approaches to sustainable development of tidal areas in UK and Korea

Balancing the engineering challenges, socio-economic pressures and environmental constraints associated with sustainable development of tidal areas is not easy. The nature and justification for tideland developments varies from country to country depending on the level of their technical and socio-economic development and of their environmental awareness. In developing countries, the demands for agricultural production may drive developments that in other locations would be viewed as being environmentally undesirable. However, whereas in Korea, the need is for increased environmental sensitivity, in the UK and Europe, we may need to rediscover a vision of the socio-economic benefits of pressing forward with appropriate developments in tidal areas, whilst seeking to maximise benefits for all stakeholders.
