An Awareness of Geomorphology for Coastal Defence Planning

A knowledge and understanding of the physical structure of the coast is important as this provides the foundation for effective shoreline management and defence planning. This paper has illustrated some of the characteristics of the shorelines that we are attempting to manage, and indicated the complexity and variability that exists. This understanding has already been applied in developing the Futurecoast project (Halcrow, 2002) to provide an assessment of coastal behaviour and a vision of shoreline evolution throughout England and Wales over the next century. This provides an informed starting point for those managing shorelines. However, in planning future coastal defence management policy, coastal engineers and managers should have an appreciation of coastal geomorphology. The objective of this paper has been to help facilitate this through delivering an awareness of the subject at an appropriate level.
