In 1995, a joint research project was initiated to assess the in-situ thermal performance of a number of insulation products used as exterior basement insulation in contact with the ground. This two-year monitoring project has provided an opportunity to analyze in detail the heat flow patterns in two experimental walls, each having 8 insulation specimens instrumented side-by-side. A 2-D analytic tool was developed to interpret the temperature fields in detail. A clearer understanding of two-dimensional heat flow patterns within the basement walls was developed. The analysis sorts out the proportion of heat flow through the exterior insulation below ground, as well as vertical and lateral components of heat loss, and storage effects in the concrete wall.
